HollywoodNews.com: This weekend is being heralded as a battle of the sexes at the multiplex as testosterone actioner “The Expendables” takes on Julia Roberts’ headliner “Eat Pray Love.” There’s also another wide release in the mix vying for the male teen demo, the Michael Cera fantasy romantic comedy “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.” A throwback to the ‘80s action genre, “Expendables,” directed, written and starring Sylvester Stallone, rounds up the big screen’s favorite gunslingers – Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Steve Austin, Mickey Rourke, Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger – in a tale about mercenaries infiltrating a South American country in an effort to off its ruthless dictator. “Expendables” was financed by Millennium/NuImage for $82 million and is expected to come in at number one this weekend with $35 million. Currently, “Expendables” has a 42% rotten score on Rotten Tomatoes; however, critics always have a hard time taking action films seriously. Among those who love the film, Ty Burr of the Boston Globe screams, “’Expendables’ is the closest thing to movie Viagra yet invented. It’s reprehensible. It’s stoopid violent. It’s a lot of unholy fun.” Similar to 2006’s “The Devil Wears Prada” a few years ago, Sony is looking to attract ladies who are huge fans of the Elizabeth Gilbert novel, “Eat Pray Love.” The summer has offered up few chick pics beyond “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse,” so look for “Eat Pray Love” to munch up a sizable amount of cash down the road. Julia Roberts plays Liz Gilbert who sets to solve her mid-life crisis with a spiritual and bountiful journey to Italy, India and Bali. Film also stars Billy Crudup, Viola Davis, James Franco, Javier Bardem and Richard Jenkins. Sony made “Eat Pray Love” at a cheap price next to other summer titles — $60 million – and the film looks to pull in about $25 million in the next three days. Mike La Salle of the San Francisco Chronicle liked the Julia Roberts headliner saying, “It’s about something important, the search for meaning and happiness, about finding one’s inner life amid the clutter and confusion of modern existence.” Most critics, as seen on Rotten Tomatoes, are giving it a 36% sour score. Lastly, Universal’s “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” based on the graphic novel by Bryan Lee O’Malley stars Michael Cera as a twenty something rocker who has gone head [...]
